About this model
The Hare Splitter is Hot Wheels’ very first take on the VW Golf. Compared to other reproductions from the same era (Majorette and Matchbox also tackled this iconic German car), it has a more balanced look that stays closer to the original’s proportions. The plastic hood is arguably its biggest drawback. Models from the 1979 to early-1980s production run are hard to find in mint condition, as the plastic parts tend to be the first to show wear. Consequently, well-preserved examples can fetch notable prices.
A “retool” version was produced between 2012 and 2015, offering more precise colors and graphics, though its historical value is decidedly lower.
